Nerium oleander is a shrub that belongs to the plant family of Apocynaceae. Please don’t let the alluring beauty of the soft pink petals fool you as this plant is considered to be one of the most toxic of the common garden variety shrubs. It is possible that the ancient Moroccan city of Volubilis took it’s name from the Latinized Berber name for flower, oualilt, as vast amounts of Nerium oleander grow on the banks of Wadi Khoumane that runs round part of the site of Volubilis.

The specific origin of Nerium is unknown, but it is native to a large area of Morocco, Mauritania, and Portugal.This plant is now common in the Southwest of the United States as well. It is estimated that 25 million Oleanders have been planted on the roadsides of California.

Carpobrotus edulis is a bright magenta flower from the family Aizoaceae. It’s considered an invasive plant species that runs rampant in a Mediterranean climate. You can find this plant, and accompanying bees, near the coast in Morocco.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata  can be found in the southern region of Morocco in the Anti-Atlas. This type of plant flourishes in the dry Moroccan desert.

The date palm, also known as Phoenix dactylifera  L, is quite common all around Morocco.

Hibiscus rosa-sinesis L AKA Chinese Hibiscus

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis  L, otherwise known as Chinese Hibiscus, can be found strategically placed in pots all over tourist destinations of Morocco. The vibrant red makes for a great contrast with a crisp ocean view. While it is used to strategically make a nice backdrop it also grows wild as well.

Echinops spinosissimus  Turra . This spiky plant was found during the spring in the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco. This is the spirit plant of Vicariously Travel.

Bougainvillea spectabilis Willd.

Bougainvillea is a very popular choice of plant in Morocco. It thrives in desert heat and grows in abundance in a variety of eye-catching colors. You will find wild Bougainvillea growing near fences and walls for support as the large arms grow too much to be supported on their own. A short drive to any destination in Morocco will undoubtedly lead you to one of these plants; it is that common.

Aloe vera L.

This is a succulent plant in the genus Aloe. It is commonly cultivated around the world and grows in a variety of climates.
